About the role

We’re working with a fast-growing technology business looking for a TechOps Lead to take ownership of a distributed, business-critical technology estate.

This is a genuine player-manager position, combining leadership of a small technical operations team with hands-on investigation and engineering. You’ll be responsible for how operational issues are diagnosed, prioritised and resolved, while remaining directly involved in solving the more complex technical problems yourself.

You’ll split your time roughly 50:50 between leading the TechOps function and hands-on technical work.

From a leadership perspective, you’ll manage and develop a small team of TechOps Engineers, oversee the service desk and ticket pipeline, establish technical standards and ensure incidents are handled effectively.

Technically, you’ll investigate complex issues across hardware, connectivity and backend applications. This could involve querying databases, testing APIs, analysing logs and working closely with software engineers to identify whether an issue sits within the application, configuration, network or physical estate.

You’ll also play a key role in improving monitoring and alerting, reducing recurring issues and technically leading the rollout of new sites.

What you will do

  • Lead, coach and develop a small team of TechOps Engineers
  • Own the service desk, ticket pipeline, prioritisation and escalation of technical issues
  • Investigate complex faults across hardware, networks, connectivity and backend applications
  • Use SQL, API testing and log analysis to identify root causes
  • Work closely with software engineering teams to diagnose and resolve application issues
  • Improve monitoring and alerting to identify degradation before it becomes an incident
  • Lead the technical delivery of new site launches, including network design, hardware specification, commissioning and go-live
  • Establish and continually improve technical support processes as the business scales
  • Take ownership during live incidents and coordinate technical resolution across multiple teams

What we are looking for

  • Previous experience managing or leading a technical support, operations or application support team
  • Recent hands-on technical experience alongside people management responsibilities
  • Experience managing direct reports, including 1:1s, coaching and performance conversations
  • Strong service desk management skills, with experience prioritising high ticket volumes and managing escalations
  • Experience supporting a distributed or multi-site technology environment
  • Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills
  • Experience using SQL to investigate technical or operational issues
  • Experience testing and troubleshooting APIs
  • Comfortable analysing application and system logs
  • Good networking fundamentals, including IP addressing, DNS and VPNs
  • Experience working with live, business-critical systems and handling technical incidents
  • Able to remain organised and make clear decisions when several issues require attention simultaneously
  • An L3 Application Support, Technical Operations or similar background would translate particularly well into this position

The package

Salary: £50,000 to £60,000 depending on experience.

Location: South London. Three days per week onsite and two days from home, with occasional travel to UK sites.

This isn’t a traditional corporate IT support role or a purely managerial position. You’ll be operating a distributed technology estate where software, hardware and connectivity all need to work together reliably.

You’ll have the opportunity to take genuine ownership of the TechOps function, remain technically hands-on and shape the processes, monitoring and standards required as the business continues to scale.
